The children village Lord Buddha Home for Children (LBHC) is the initiative of the Dutch Foundation: Stichting Kinderhulp Bodhgaya/Child Welfare Bodhgaya Foundation (SKBWB). The foundation offers a wholistic development of orphans and deserted children in and around Bodhgaya, Bihar state, India. Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra (NBJK) is the local partner NGO in India who directly executes the project, oversees and manages the LBHC.
The children village facilitates accommodates now 70 children, boys as well as girls, in small family houses for 10 children each. The children are raised by their "foster" mother. A small health centre, a place for vocational training and a community hall are part of the children village. The health centre and the vocational training centre are also available for the local community. The buildings are surrounded by a play yard, a sports field, a kitchen garden and a flower garden. There is also a guesthouse on the campus.
The major activities of the project are: accommodation, educational provisions, vocational training, and basic health care. Other activities are meditation, sport, and music teaching that completes the wholistic development of the children.
Since 2012 the foundation, the local NGO partner and advisors have been in the process of envisioning LBHC for its sustainability and effective management of its core business, the health centre and the vocational training centre. An evaluation has taken place in 2013 with the following overall objective: Seeking independent advice for the future (i) capacity need for the mothers/care-givers, (ii) governance and (iii) to make (the core business of) the LBHC (children) independent from the Dutch Foundation in 2020 with grants from India. In this way it's important to say that by starting the health centre (in 2011) and the vocational training centre (in 2012) the agreement between the Dutch Foundation (SKBWB) and the local partner (NBJK) were that the local partner should start a process for the sustainability for the two centers: for the medical centre from 2014 and for the vocational centre from 2015.
The major findings, analysis and recommendations of the evaluation report shows that suitable steps must be made from now on for a course correction in the future plan for the LBHC. The suitable steps such as the time-bound target to be achieved with indicators, analysis on the achievements or problems for course corrections, long-term plan for the vocational training or medical services, mobilization of local resources, team approach, building good communication between the local NGO and the foundation, good female counselor for mothers & children, manager for sustainability measures etc
The boards of the Dutch Foundation and NBJK have its concerns and commitment for the good running of LBHC and to sustain the institution
