Inaugurated in 1969, the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, ranks among India"s leading cultural institutions. The first multi-venue, multi-purpose arts centre to be built in South Asia, it has been committed since its inception to preserving and promoting the country"s rich and vibrant heritage of music, dance and theatre, as well as encouraging new and innovative work in the cultural field.

As India"s role on the international stage expands, the NCPA has been investing in the country"s cultural future. We currently present more than 500 events each year, encompassing the full range of Indian performing arts traditions as well as giving a platform to international artists from a diverse range of genres including theatre, contemporary dance, opera, jazz and chamber music.

In 2006, the NCPA established its own resident ensemble, the Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI), the country"s first fully professional symphony orchestra, which offers a world-class series of concerts at the NCPA over the course of two seasons each year, in September and February.

With its five theatres (including two venues that seat more than 1,000 people each), two galleries, extensive archives and numerous reception spaces, the NCPA offers flexible facilities to suit every cultural activity as well as boasting some of the best technical resources of any arts and entertainment venue in India.

Education & Training

We are developing a reputation as a major centre for training and education, building on an already well-established programme of workshops, seminars and special events for families and children. Professional instrumental lessons are available for talented Indian musicians selected to join the SOI. Since June 2008, the NCPA has been offering Suzuki Method training for children aged four to seven in partnership with schools across Mumbai.

Research & Documentation

As part of our mission to preserve India"s cultural heritage, the NCPA has built up extensive archives of more than 6,000 hours of music and film, recorded at the NCPA over the past 40 years. We are in the process of making these vast resources available to a wider public, both in India and internationally.

The NCPA Library is the only specialist performing arts library in the city of Mumbai. The collection comprises more than 20,000 books about the performing arts and other cultural spheres, including film, painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, television and fashion.
